  Thoughts

  I’d like to start with my thoughts on the plot and then move on to the form of the novel.

  【1】Plot:

  The first part of the novel is essentially a presentation of the evidential chain in the case of the murder of the young boy. It tells the story of how Detective Ralph Anderson and the police gradually suspect and determine Terry Maitland as the prime suspect. The detective team finds eight "relevant witnesses" who have all seen Terry Maitland around the time of the murder, providing strong testimonial evidence. In addition, three examination reports - traffic records, blood type and DNA test results, and autopsy reports - serve as physical evidence to link Terry Maitland to the crime. These pieces of evidence further corroborate the testimonies of the witnesses. However, Terry Maitland seems to have an alibi.

  I don't know if it's because I've watched too many crime solving games and shows, but in this exceptionally smooth process of solving the case, I sense a strangely normal atmosphere. The chain of evidence is so perfect that it seems impossible to find any flaws even through rational analysis. However, if you just think about one question, you'll realize that none of it makes sense. Would a person who brutally murdered a young boy really go to a crowded place covered in blood, where all the witnesses had a chance to survive? In all the logical reasoning, there are actually doubts. He clearly brought a change of clothes, so why did he have to go to a strip club restroom to change instead of doing it immediately after the crime? Why did he need to remind the taxi driver to inform the dispatcher? Why go to a crowded place covered in blood? And yet, these questions seem to have been overlooked in the detective's investigation.

  Certainly, my questioning is not meant to imply any lack of rigor in the author's writing (in fact, many online comments do just that), nor is it meant to criticize the detective's stupidity. Instead, I noticed some underlying emotions in this case. The brutal rape and murder of a young boy in a desolate park naturally elicits widespread empathy and a desire to quickly apprehend the killer. The abundance of "conclusive" evidence at this time led to a hasty suspect identification, and each subsequent piece of evidence served to confirm this conclusion rather than investigate the suspect further. This is why some of the questions I mentioned earlier were overlooked.

  Additionally, there are some details in the story. Terry was the baseball coach of the detective's son, helping him build confidence, and he also taught football and baseball to many boys. These implied personal connections may have suppressed any doubts in the detective's reasoning process. Everyone involved in the case, eager to prove this conclusion, failed to see that the true killer was the outsider. I also wonder if my own thoughts are appropriate, but Terry's character is portrayed as a "good person" in the town. When a positive character is subverted, people always seem to have an overwhelming desire to prove it, whether through public opinion or psychologically. The deliberate arrest of Terry in a crowded baseball stadium and the media immediately arriving at his home all seem to be attempts to prove what kind of person he really is.

  Because I haven't read the rest of the content yet, but I glanced at the synopsis and reader comments, I know that Terry is not the ultimate killer. Even when the truth is revealed, will the impact of this controversy really dissipate? Based on recent attention to some controversies and rumors on the internet, I believe the answer is no.

  【2】Form:

  As for its plot setting, I really enjoy some of the scenes in the TV show. For example, when Elena first points out Terry without giving any information about him, and then suddenly sighs before saying, "It's Terry, I'm sure of it," when the detective asks for further questioning. Also, after Terry is arrested and gets into the car, the detective asks him if he has ever harmed his child. However, it must be admitted that the novel's form is irreplaceable. This form is actually similar to a popular game nowadays called "script kill（剧本杀）." In script kill, based on a certain plot, you are given a lot of materials and need to deduce the killer through layers of reasoning. The testimonies of the eight witnesses and the three pieces of evidence are very much like this type of game, as if you are also participating in the investigation as a detective or police officer. If you don't pause and think after reading, it's actually very easy to follow the detective's train of thought.

  【3】Opinions and emotional responses

  Actually, I really enjoy this book, and my opinion hasn't changed even after reading many reviews. After finishing the first chapter, I had many speculations, such as the existence of identical DNA in identical twins, or some psychological effect causing a suggestion that the witnesses believed the killer to be Terry. In most detective novels, there is always a rational and plausible explanation for a mysterious case. However, Stephen King chose not to do that (after reading some reviews and spoilers). The author introduced supernatural elements, which sets it apart from other books of this genre that I have read before.

  I don't want all literary works to adhere strictly to rationality, especially in this era of rapid development of artificial intelligence. As I gradually know about something relevant, many rational judgments and actions can be programmed and replaced, while errors and emotions become the traits that distinguish humans from artificial intelligence. I don't want the world to be limited to what we can see in front of us. Without the unknown, there is no anticipation and exploration. Many people dislike the occurrence of supernatural phenomena in detective novels, thinking that it is just the author's forced explanation. However, the author simply wants to provide readers with another possibility and not be "science-centric." This world, apart from logical reasoning, also has another set of rules, perhaps based on belief or some other things，I think.

      张文木老师是一个让我很敬佩的老师，但是看过这本书之后，让我不得不提出几点不同的想法。

      1 尽管书中对毛泽东充分肯定，但是也仅仅是局限在毛泽东对中华民族的利益维护这个层次肯定的。忽视了毛泽东在世界政局当中的道义。

      2 张老师的观点现实感很强，但立论的出发点不是一个具有道义高度的社会主义国家。

      3 对邓小平的认可来源于他所搞的市场经济改革。张老师显然充分肯定了市场经济带给中国的富强。

      4 对中国当下所产生的矛盾主要是从外部找原因，所以解决途径也是求诸于外。

      5 在《论中国海权》里，海权概念是一种属于《国际海洋公约》范畴之内的概念，也就是它区别了以往海洋国家的霸权思想。但是张老师的海权思想尽管不是霸权思想，但是有着鲜明的争霸特点。

      6 希望争霸取得区域大国地位之后不去争夺全球霸权，而继续保持区域大国地位。在我看来，要不是根本争不到区域大国的地位，要不就是争到之后必然导致全球争霸，无论如何，张老师的想法是不可能实现的。历史上没有，今后也不会有。

      7 一个争霸不休的世界是我们想要得到的世界吗？

      8 张老师有点中国马基雅维利的感觉。
