"Don’t anybody move. This is a holdup," Vito said as he confronted the roomful of powerful mobsters, his words muffled by a woolen ski mask pulled down over his long, thin face. Despite those words, this was not about robbery. Nothing would be taken but three lives and the rights to an underworld throne.

  本书目标是清代官式建筑的做法及各部分构材名称。蓝本以清工部《工程做法则例》（27种建筑物各部尺寸单+瓦石油漆算料算工）以及营造学社的《营造算例》（匠师秘传抄本的搜集册子，有计算程式）为主。有老匠师切磋甚密，又有社长朱启钤（朱桂辛）在研究材料和经费上的支持。脱稿后，又经两年的增补修正，才终成正稿。

  正如梁先生在序中所说，本书既不是建筑史，也不是建筑理论。无涉结构，力学，美学，实用的探讨。虽然内容无涉，但梁林是旨在开启未来进一步的历史研究以及建筑创作的。所以特意安排了一章绪论。“但在研究一代建筑则例之前，不能不稍有历史方面演变的认识及理论方面的基本了解。故烦内子林徽音为坐绪论一章。”

  绪论的语言带着那个年代的人特有的优雅，夹杂着月光烛影的氛围，娓娓道来。林在那时就已经对于中国古建筑有了相当把握。摘录并心得零散如下。

  中国古建筑三个基本要素：台基，梁柱（木造），屋顶。其中迥然异于他系建筑者，自是屋顶部分。

  中国古建筑在平面上是离散的，若干独立的建筑物，分配在院宇各方。

  论建筑上的美……其轮廓，色彩，材质，但美的大部分精神所在，却蕴于其权衡之中。长与短之比，平面各大小之分配，立体上各体积，各部分之轻重。增减毫厘之玄妙。中国建筑的美并非因其有色彩，或其特殊形式，而是产生这特殊样式的内部，充盈智慧的组织。

  旧制建筑不适用的原因：现代生活种种与旧日积渐不同……宫殿庙宇，官衙城楼失掉功用，另一方面新组织产生诸如学校，工厂，医院，商场等公共建筑。适用，坚固，美观之适用，由于换了新的问题，旧的答案不能适应，自是理所当然。（中国古建筑与树木尺度相称，不出木材可能的范围。而越来越大型的公共建筑不再适合用传统木构系统解决。）

  斗拱：斗，以第三方出现，是栱与翘之关节，整个斗拱又是柱与顶之关节。这是一种很聪明的策略。将矛盾在易操作的关节处解决。

  琉璃于汉代自罽（ji,4）宾国（汉朝时之西域国名。位于印度北部。即今喀什米尔一带之地。）传入中国，用于屋顶始于北魏，明清应用尤广。

  传统工程的弱点，举了三点，一是将人对木料，尤其是梁，用料太费，用极高的安全率，以避免危险。且未能理性地认识梁高比例。二是匠师素不用三角形。三是地基太浅。（传统木材靡费可能还有另一层原因。小材取代大材虽然省料但是费工，倚赖机械加工业，以及配套的精密构件。在中国当下也未成气候。系统改良的觉悟始终未能成大器。匠人也难脱离单纯劳力的惯性。）
