作者简介：Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

　　While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field—including those of former students, now in health careers—that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

　　In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

　　In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

　　Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology¨ CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Sigma Xi.   William Gibson在Mona Lisa Overdrive写到上面那段话，仿佛就是在描述很多读者在阅读Sprawl三部曲时候的感受。Gibson的叙事比较松散，行文更是随性，加上从Count Zero开始的多线叙事结构，很容易让读者顾此失彼，读着读着就忘记之前的一些细节，这不利于读者理解Gibson在构建情节时的用心。Gibson的文风带有极简主义色彩。我个人很喜欢他的文笔，觉得他在描写和氛围渲染上做的非常好，在科幻小说作家中非常突出。也许，Gibson在科幻小说家中的文笔的突出，就好比是Raymond Chandler之于推理小说家。这篇评论的导语是Neuromancer的开头，我觉得短短十几个字，就把Cyberpunk的氛围给完美的铺陈开了。勇敢一点来说，这个开头就像是属于Cyberpunk小说的《百年孤独》的开头。

  纵然Gibson的文笔上乘，但是极简的文风给译者应该是造成了很大的麻烦，相信译者Denovo和姚向辉也尽力了，但不得不承认，有些中英文的差异，是无法被克服的，这会造成翻译下来的文字，丧失了很多原文的美感。比如这篇评论的导语，就非常的不好翻译对味。类似的例子实在太多，如果读者觉得Sprawl三部曲的中文译本在情节上，无法让你大快朵颐，那么请尝试英文原版吧，兴许读者能从Gibson的文字中，感受到Cyberpunk的美还有文学的美。就仿佛是电影《银翼杀手》一样，情节很简单，但复杂的是Cyberpunk里的氛围，世界，和美的构造。下面从Sprawl三部曲节选的几段文字，可以让读者一瞥Gibson的好文笔（有几处实在太美与太妙，我隐忍住，没有写下带有自嗨情绪的评论）：

  最后关于Gibson三部曲的文笔，我的感受是Neuromancer与Count Zero一样好，前者行文更散(Scattered)，后者行文集中(Concentrate)了很多，两者都强过Mona Lisa Overdrive。Count Zero的文笔，好到让我在阅读过程中多次想到了电影《边境杀手》的画面。在多线叙事，情节，和文笔上，我觉得Gibson在Count Zero里做到了完美的平衡。相比而言，Mona Lisa Overdrive在这几个方面就有点失衡；Gibson花了太多笔墨去提及和拓展Neuromancer和Count Zero里的情节。这就造成，读过前两部，迫切期待第三部有新情节发展的读者，觉得Mona Lisa Overdrive的情节有点不够，或者，在Mona Lisa Overdrive里读了大量前两部情节的recap后，忘记了第三部情节里的一些细节。下面几个Q&A，旨在帮那些忘记或者忽略了Sprawl三部曲里一些情节细节的读者解惑。需要说明的是，Gibson是一个喜欢分散情节，留白，与含蓄描写的作者，我下面的解读也不能保证与Gibson的真实答案或者动机相匹配（我欢迎其他读者，来指点我的解读里解释的不妥的地方，大家一起讨论出个所以然来）；我结合网上的一些资料(reddit帖子和一些论文)，努力做到不过分诠释与用原文来解读。Gibson对于Mona Lisa Overdrive诸多重要情节的进行了留白，让其变得含糊不清，这对于读者来说确实有好有坏：有的读者就是喜欢情节交代清楚，有的读者喜欢揣摩回味那些留白处，比如两大AI，Neauromancer和Wintermute分别所代表Personality&Immortality和Hive Mind&Decision Maker，它们相匹配的功能，它们的融合，这些故事设定背后的隐喻。

  1. 为什么在Count Zero里面，Loa们要指导Chris Mitchell开发Biochip？代价是Chris把Biochip用在自己的女儿Angie大脑中。为什么Loa要Turner把Angie带到Beauvoir等人身边？

  Loa们作为Matrix中的AI（是Neuromancer里与Neuromancer融合之后Wintermute分裂出的多个子AI），希望人类开发出Biochip，这样Biochip用在人身上，人可以无需连上Deck就进入Matrix（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第7章里的“Her father, long ago, in Arizona, had cautioned her against jacking in. You don't need it, he'd said. And she hadn't, because she'd dreamed cyberspace.”），反过来，这样更方便Loa们直接通过Biochip来影响那些使用Biochip的人的行为，或者对他们的门徒来发号施令，以此来扩大Loa们对人类社会的影响（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第3章里的"Legba led you into the world to serve his own ends."）。也许部分因为这个目的，在Mona Lisa Overdrive的第36章里，Loa之一Brigitte说道“The biochip was necessary”（生物芯片是必需的）。

  Chris把Biochip植入Angie的大脑中，Angie作为可能的第一个Biochip植入人Prototype，Loa们想把Angie抢到自己身边（自己的门徒Beauvoir等人身边），好好培养她（也是保护她，以防被想通过Biochip和T-A Core把意识上传到Matrix里的富豪Verek抢过去），让她进入人类社会来施展Loa们的抱负。在Count Zero中，Loa们就是通过驾驭（ride）Angie，即Loa通过Biochip来取代Angie本人的意识，来告诉Turner如何把Angie带到Beauvoir等人身边。

  2. 为什么在Mona Lisa Overdrive里面Continuity要命令给Angie下药？

  Angie在Loa之一Legba一系列操纵下，成为了全世界最著名的SimStim明星，在背后的超级大公司Sense/Net里如日中天。Continuity是帮助运营Sense/Net公司的AI，它做决策是要从公司利益来考虑的。它清楚Angie大脑中的Biochip和与Loa们的联系，并且，也许觉得Biochip、Angie与Loa们的联系，会对Sense/Net公司的可持续发展造成威胁（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第36章的“Hilton Swift is obliged to implement Continuity's decisions. Sense/Net is too complex an entity to survive, otherwise,...”和“Continuity is continuity. Continuity is Continuity's job.... ”），于是命令公司人员对Angie用了一种药，使Angie大脑中Biochip逐渐无法正常工作。Angie因此无法被Loa驾驭（失去与之前有过联系的Loa们的联系），也无法通过Biochip进入Matrix里（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive第3章"It had been three years since the loa had ridden her, three years since they had touched her at all. But now?" ），所以才有Angie在Malibu的大宅子里，用Bobby留下的Deck接入Matrix。虽然Angie的Biochip失去了原有的一些功能，但Mona Lisa Overdrive登场的Loa--Brigitte却可以联系上并且驾驭Angie，因为Brigitte是基于Bioship开发的AI(参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第40章里的'But who are you, Brigitte? What are you really?”，“I am the message your father was told to write. I am the veves he drew in your head”)，而其他的很多Loa都不是，Brigitte是of a different order(参见Mona Lisa Overdrive第3章里的“...Though you have ceased to poison yourself, still the Horsemen cannot reach you. I am of a different order.”)。

  Continuity跟想要绑架Angie的那帮人Swain，Robin Lanier, 3Jane不是一伙的，它知道这些人想要绑架Angie的事情，却选择了纵容他们（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第36章的"Continuity allowed Robin Lanier's subversion by 3Jane's agents"）。我觉得也许Continuity是在从公司的利益权衡了利弊后，认为Angie被绑架后相当于离开了Sense/Net，那么Angie与Loa们的联系就不会给公司带来威胁了，更何况Mona会被整容成Angie的模样，可以用作Angie的替代品（虽然Swain那帮人是准备杀死这个Mona，来造成Angie被杀的假象），这样公司就更没什么影响了。Continuity本身是一个年轻的AI，做决策方面还比较幼稚，存在考虑不周到的地方（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第36章的“Continuity is naive”和第40章的“Be kind to Continuity. He fears that in his clumsiness, he has earned your displeasure.”）。

  3. 为什么在Mona Lisa Overdrive里面，3Jane要开发出Aleph（阿列夫机）？

  关于Aleph的重要描述：

  The slab was a single solid lump of biochip. If that was true, the thing's storage capacity was virtually infinite; it would've been unthinkably expensive to manufacture....With no link to the global matrix, the data was immune to every kind of attack via cyberspace. The catch, of course, was that you couldn't access it via the matrix; it was dead storage. --Mona Lisa Overdrive的第21章

  "No," Gentry said, "it's not sim-stim. It's completely interactive. And it's a matter of scale. If this is aleph-class biosoft, he literally could have anything at all in there. In a sense, he could have an approximation of everything....."--Mona Lisa Overdrive的第21章

  "He's got a lot more than that. He's got a universe more than that. That was just a construct worked up from a commercial stim. What he's got is an abstract of the sum total of data constuiting cyberspace. Still, it's closer than I've gotten before.....He didn't tel you why he was in there?"--Mona Lisa Overdrive的第28章

  因为3Jane想在自己死后，把自己的意识上传到Cyberspace里面，为此耗尽了她家族企业T-A的财产，建造了Aleph(参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第31章的"'Dead girl,' Bobby said. 'You saw her construct. Blew her family fortune to build this thing.'")。Aleph的硬件是基于Biochip的，并且具有超级大的储存能力。在Neuromancer里面的Construct Dixie（南方人）和Mona Lisa Overdrive的Construct Finn（芬兰人），他俩都是只读性质的，尤其是前者，Neuromancer里面有提到过，不能有新的记忆（在成为Construct之前的记忆还是有的），从而不能学习开发新的技能。相比于这两者而言，3Jane上传到Aleph里的Construct不仅拥有记忆，而且拥有整个Matrix的副本（得益于Aleph超强的存储能力），相当于拥有整个世界并在其中永生。

  Aleph之于3Jane相当于是个Soul catcher（灵魂容器），除了是基于Biochip之外，当Aleph接入Matrix的时候，Matrix里面的实体（人甚至或者AI）无法自己接入或者访问Aleph，Aleph有很厚的ICE（冰墙）(参见Mona Lisa Overdrive第21章里的："...'I see what it is. An kind of ice. A security program.' 'That monkey?'...")；不过，Aleph里面的实体却可以把Matrix里的实体给拉进Aleph里面，比如Mona Lisa Overdrive里，3Jane就把在Matrix里的Tick, Kumiko, Colin给拉进了Aleph里面。当Aleph没有接入Matrix的时候，访问Aleph的方式只有直接Jack into Aleph，就像Mona Lisa Overdrive第24章开头Slick做的那样，他进入了Aleph去找Bobby。

  4. 为什么在Mona Lisa Overdrive里面，最后Macroform会出现在Matrix（Cyberspace）里面？

  也许是因为Bobby要安排一个Borg-Ward cargo drone到Slick, Gentry等人所在的工厂（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive第38章里的”...but I've arranged a little diversion....I'm still working it out. I've rerouted a Borg-Ward cargo drone, out of Newark...“），来分散3Jane派到工厂来抢回Aleph的雇佣兵，并且还跟Matrix里的Loa们商量了Molly她们来工厂取走Aleph，还有就是控制工厂里Slick制作的机器人们与那些雇佣兵作战。为了做这些事，接入在Aleph里的Bobby，必须把Aleph接入到Matrix里面。Macroform实则是Aleph接入Matrix后在Matrix里的显现形态（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive第21章里的："Tick's mysterious macroform is actually a very expensive pile of biochips constructed to order. A sort of toy universe...This...person, if we choose to so regard her, created it in a pathetic bid for, oh, not immortality, really, buy simply to have her way.”，her指的是3Jane）。

  5. 为什么在Mona Lisa Overdrive里面，Bobby接入到Aleph之后，就再也不Jack out了，宁愿死，也要呆在Aleph里面？

  类似于Neuromancer里面的Case，Bobby也许也是那种痴迷于Matrix/Cyberspace以致于对肉身会有一定的瞧不上与嘲笑（参考Neuromancer里第20章"...to the meat, the flesh the cowboys mocked."）。Bobby可能觉得只要意识能在Aleph里面永存，并且能在Aleph里面研究 When it Changed（大剧变）的前因后果，肉身死亡也无所谓（Mona Lisa Overdrive的第38章里：“But Slick could see that Bobby didn't care much at all, about dying. Maybe he figured he'd just be in there, like that 3Jane. Or maybe he just didn't give a shit; sometimes people got that way.”）。注意，那为什么Bobby不直接在Matrix里研究？因为Bobby偷走了3Jane的Aleph，Matrix里想必到处是想要追杀Bobby的人。

  6. 为什么在Mona Lisa Overdrive里面，Loa们要让Molly把Angie带到Aleph机跟前，并且让Angie把自我意识upload到Aleph里面？为什么Angie会死去？

  Loa们半路插手3Jane, Swain, Robin Lanier绑架Angie的行动，并且让Molly把Angie带到Aleph机那儿，让Angie完成意识上传到Aleph里。Loa们这个安排背后的动机，Gibson貌似在三部曲里并没有间接地或者直接地提到；这个动机恐怕是全书最大的疑点了（理解了这个动机，是理解Mona Lisa Overdrive的关键）。我的猜测是，Loa们需要Angie来到Aleph跟前，完成其意识的上传，相当于是一把钥匙打开了Aleph的门，考虑到Brigitte与Angie靠着Biochip的联系，这样就可以让Brigitte进入Aleph的世界（参见Mona Lisa Overdrive的第40章里的"Brigitte walks beside her, and there is no pressure, no hollow of night, no hive sound. There are no candles. Continuity is there too,..."），让Loa们带着Aleph里的世界（人类Matrix的副本），探索人马座的Matrix和其AI。

  Loa们把“Angie到Aleph机那儿完成意识上传”的行动称作"Marriage"，至于Marriage指的到底是什么，也很难说清楚个所以然。一种可能是，字面意义上，Marriage指的是让Angie与Bobby在Aleph里面团聚。Reddit上有网友说是：“The idea of "marriage", I believe, involves Angie and, by extension, the Loa joining the matrix” 和" Angella left he body behind when she became one with the Loa and cyberspace."[1]。Mona Lisa Overdrive第40章里，在上传意识到Aleph之前，Angie能看到房间里所有人相关的数据，这有点像是Neuromancer结尾与Neuromancer融合之后的Wintermute（参考Neuromancer最后1章:"’I'm the matrix, Case.‘ Case laughed. 'Where's that get you?' 'Nowhere. Everywhere. I'm the sum total of the works, the whole show.'"），扯远一点，也像是《黑客帝国》里被开过光之后的Neo，如此说来，Marriage在深层次意义上，也许指的就是Reddit网友说的那个意思：与Matrix join together（至于这个join包括不包括Loa们，我也说不清楚）。

  Angie之所以会死去，我觉得一个部分原因是，她染上Continuity安排的毒品后，大脑中Biochip的功能弱化，每次动用Biochip，比如Brigitte驾驭她或者与她联系的时候，都会造成身体的损伤，会出血（Mona Lisa Overdrive里至少有3处提及）。Mona Lisa Overdrive第40章里，在上传意识到Aleph之前，又被Brigitte安排作为Marriage的一部分内容，Angie动用Biochip看到与房间每个人相关的数据，这个估计让她身体损伤不少吧。当然，也许最主要的原因是，Angie在上传意识给了Aleph以后，肉体就只是一座躯壳了，可能类似的，Bobby也是因为上传意识给了Aleph，才会死去。

  一个有意思的对比：如下文所说，在Mona Lisa Overdrive里，Angie和Bobby决定呆在Aleph这样一个haven里；而在Neuromancer里，Case却决定离开Linda Lee，离开那个Neuromancer营造的haven。

  The Aleph is a refuge, a haven, a marvelous safe place that manifests itself and allows entry to some; it's like the haven on the deserted beach with Linda Lee and the boy Neuromancer that Case eventually rejects in Neuromancer.   最后，姚向辉在Count Zero和Mona Lisa Overdrive的中译本里，把Sprawl翻译成"蔓城"，但实际上Sprawl是从波士顿到亚特兰大的所有美东区域，姚老师不会是曼城球迷才要执意把Sprawl如此翻译的吧？

  知识性错误多，想当然多。不建议中学生读，会误导孩子。

  我读书少，水平低，仅列出自己发现的问题。若说的不对也欢迎看到本文的大拿拍砖。

  知识性错误类

  1、p29，周朝是唯一只称王不称帝的朝代。

  其实秦朝之前称王称帝并没有区别；

  2、p29，从岐山到洛阳都属于王畿。

  真实情况是，西周，王畿是镐京及周边；东周，王畿是洛阳及周边。

  3、p29，历史上有没有烽火戏诸侯不知道。

  没有，这是有定论的；

  4、p29，灭周的申国在南阳。

  错，灭周的是西申，作者好像不知道有三个申国。

  5、p30，秦国有三大水利工程：都江堰、灵渠、郑国渠。

  错，作者好像分不清秦国和秦朝；

  6、p54，汉初，与民休息，道教风行一时。

  道家、道教傻傻分不清楚；

  7、p54，五斗米道兴起，引发黄巾之乱。

  就算只看过三国演义也不至于犯这种错误吧；

  8、p76，到了清朝人口爆发式增长，山西人开始走西口，但带来了另一个群体——晋商；

  不了解晋商历史不要乱说；

  9、p80，河北有时也称河内；

  啊！

  10、p80，燕国这个地方就是现在的北京。

  这么自信吗？

  11、p80，战国后期燕国才登上历史舞台。

  要怎样才算登上啊？

  12、p85，北宋离慕容燕太久，还隔着魏晋南北朝，隋唐五代十国。

  16、p137，孙中山是个较早接受西方式教育的人，广州也几乎是化外之地。清朝以前，从上海到广州的沿海，都是落后不开化的蛮荒之地。

  快看，活捉一条义务教育制度下的漏网之鱼，另外广州靓仔有四个字要送给你；

  17、p151，唐朝后，中原王朝再也没能将安南纳入版图；

  瞧不起”明粉“是吧？

  想当然类

  1、p34，嫡长子继承制天然会产生资本主义。

  2、p37，为什么有个成语“楚楚动人”，因为楚国的一切东西都是美好的，楚成了美好的代名词。

  3、p43，“待字闺中”，父母给取了字，表示你成年了，可以出嫁了。

  4、p44，有功绩的男人称姓是可耻的，表明你是啃老族。那男子未成年呢？要么用父亲的氏，要么叫公子某。

  这几句是想当然加知识型错误。

  5、p50，老吴王想把位子传给季札，但碍于春秋礼法……

  6、p50，季札收了个弟子叫孔丘；

  7、p89，从蒙古人开始，中国历史才不是单独的历史，而是世界历史的一部分；

  8、p105，楚国为了挖苦巴人，把低俗的歌曲叫”下里巴人“；

  9、p138，省会”贵阳“，就是难见太阳的意思。

  不说了，累了。
