  薪能是一种夜间露天表演的能剧。至于能剧么，我猜应该和中国的戏剧相似吧，只知当是以舞蹈表演为主，但也有爱情故事作为结构。这篇小说大致讲的是从小相依为命的堂姐弟之间的情感经历。堂姐昌子和堂弟俊太郎有着极为相似的遭遇，两人自小就失去了父亲，母亲随后改嫁，之后又一起和祖父生活在一起。这样的时间持续了十几年，这期间，他们从来不曾和自己的母亲见过面。之后昌子出嫁，祖父过世，俊太郎则独自生活在日见没落的家里，而这时的家，不过是一个还没有卖掉的能剧堂而已。昌子婚姻失败后精神倍受打击，与堂弟久未联系后却在看能剧时偶然相遇，自比，从前心里的那些想法又茂盛了起来。而生活并不顺利的堂弟这时也因为生母的事情陷入过去的回忆里。

  在这样的背景下，两人放弃之前对于血亲的顾虑，开始了违背伦理的爱情。但这样的日子并没有持续很久，对丈夫的背叛让昌子决定和俊太郎徇情。得到堂弟的赞同后，两人双双自杀在能剧堂的舞台上。

  小说始终将两人的经历置于逐渐没落的家庭背景下，还有能剧堂下渐渐熄灭的篝火。能剧与祭祀有关，能剧堂外燃烧的篝火也让人极自然地联想到灭亡。这灭亡不仅仅只是曾经繁盛的家，更是两人不可能有结果不可能有希望的爱情。在这样的环境下长大，注定了两人的爱情在盛开时就看到了清晰的灭亡。

  那么，徇情似乎也就是两人必然的结果吧。

  那么，怎样的爱情才算纯粹？就算已经看到了爱情悲剧的结局，还是会义无反顾地走到一起，就算这样的日子并不很久，却还是会有前所未有的幸福，这样的爱情，到底值不值得我们这样放弃生命？

  爱情真的可以抛开一切存在么？可以抛开金钱、地位么？可以抛开世俗、血亲么？可以抛开一切可以想像得到的困难么？但是真正抛开这些的爱情，必定难以长久。所以，你是想要一时、短暂的、毫无杂念的爱情？还是希望拥有长远，但也许有着缺陷的爱情？
